Purpose
Typeset a full book “Design is a Job” by Mike Monteiro with a prepared unformatted manuscript. It has to be 9×6 and should be in black and white. In addition, it must be a perfect bind book with book cloth and designed jacket to go on top of the book. The pages should be a part of the greater typographic system.
Approach
The text was a 104-paged Microsoft Word document. The narrative is about the author establishing a design firm after successful years in the industry. He describes the struggles of balancing the business side of it and creativity. What stood out to me is that one of the highest-ranking design jobs is Art Director – and whether it is worth being a leader but design less.
Initial
Sketches
I was trying out a variety of styles – both drawn by mouse in a form of straight lines and kinetic type manipulations. Most of the stylistic approaches were for the title page of the spreads. In the end, I focused on the idea of a crystal cave – where a design is exploring a certain cave-spread and occasionally seeing the crystals hanging from the top of the page. I printed a crystal pattern on the book cloth of the final book to emphasize the cave. The transparent cover is meant to convey the important information a reader would see on their bookshelf.
